VentureBeat Profiles is the best place for "information about cool startups"
LinkedIn also generates company information
KillerStartups is another list of startups
LinkSV (Silicon Valley only) list people and investors.
Crunchvision is a map of Crunchbase companies. WayFaring is another map only SF Bay Area (and out-of-date?).
Inc5000 is a great searchable list for established private companies
including SF/East Bay and South Bay specific lists
Rich's NorCal is a comprehensive but often out of date resource
You can get more access if you go through the San Jose Library portal (need library card)
Hoovers is another good source (with some free and some premium content requiring subscription or purchase)
Software 500 top 500 software companies by revenue in Software Magazine (requires login)
